South Africa: Pitso Mosimane makes his big comeback as manager of the Bafana Bafana

On 1 September, the South African Football Association officially announced Pitso Mosimane’s return as head coach of the national team. The South African coach will take charge of the Bafana Bafana for upcoming fixtures.

14 years after his last spell

This marks a return for Mosimane, who previously managed South Africa between 2010 and 2012. SAFA has opted for an experienced manager, just a few weeks before the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Mosimane succeeds the Belgian Hugo Broos. Aged 62, he began his coaching career in 1995 and holds a CAF Pro licence.

Pitso Mosimane brings with him a wealth of experience on the African stage. During his career, he has won 20 titles. Notably, he led Al Ahly FC to two CAF Champions League victories in 2020 and 2021. He has a total of three titles in the competition to his name, including one with Mamelodi Sundowns and two with the Egyptian club. The Football Association is highlighting this local and continental experience as a key factor in reviving the South African national team.

A debut against Guinea and Eritrea

The new manager will take up his post shortly. His first match will be against Guinea on 26 September. He will then host Eritrea on 30 September. The Bafana Bafana will also play home and away matches against Kenya in November. These fixtures will mark the start of South Africa’s campaign in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
