Swiss Super League: Samuel Essende shines at the start of the season

Samuel Essende delivered another standout performance for the Young Boys in their emphatic 6-0 away victory over Thun. With two goals and an assist, the 28-year-old Leopard has already climbed to the top of the Super League scoring chart. It’s a dazzling start to the season—just in time for DR Congo.

A brace to kick off the demolition

Starting the match and playing the full 90 minutes, Essende gave Thun a tough time. He found the net in the 55th minute, then capped off the rout in the 90th. In between, he also provided an assist. Having already scored a brace against FC Sion last weekend, the 28-year-old striker now boasts 4 goals in just 2 league appearances. The Congolese forward is already the leading scorer in the Swiss Super League.

The new spearhead in Bern

Essende joined Young Boys in February 2026 from Augsburg for €3 million, and last season he had already netted 6 goals and provided 1 assist. This year, he seems to have taken it up a notch. Physical, technical, and clinical—the former Augsburg man is establishing himself as the focal point of Bern’s attack.

A strong signal for the Leopards

With 11 caps for DR Congo, Essende heads into the upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifiers brimming with confidence. His rediscovered striker’s instinct is excellent news for Sébastien Desabre. In top form, the number 9 for the Young Boys is more than ever a formidable weapon for the Leopards.
