"The Elephant Graveyard": French Legend Issues Stark Warning to Cristiano Ronaldo
French football legend and 1998 FIFA World Cup winner Bixente Lizarazu has issued a stark, unfiltered warning to Cristiano Ronaldo, asserting that the 41 year old’s fierce ego risks consigning him to football's "elephant graveyard" if the ongoing dispute engulfing the Portugal national team camp is not handled with immediate maturity.

A three-way breakdown in Lisbon
Speaking on Sunday on French television programme Téléfoot L'After, the former Bayern Munich and France left-back dissected the escalating turmoil surrounding Ronaldo’s international future following his abrupt departure from the national team setup under manager Jorge Jesus.
Lizarazu refused to lay the blame solely at the feet of the veteran forward, instead framing the controversy as a collective administrative and managerial failure.
"If this soap opera continues, it is a massive mistake by all three parties, the Portuguese Football Federation, Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo... With a player like him and what he represents for Portugal, things cannot end this way. It is a disaster" Lizarazu stated.
The brutal reality of aging and vanishing trust
The 56 year old pundit highlighted the immense psychological challenge that aging athletes face when confronting the natural decline of their physical attributes especially a figure who built an identity around supernatural longevity.
"The hardest thing when you are an aging player, and especially when you are Cristiano Ronaldo who built an image of himself as invincible, is accepting that you are less powerful and less fast. Unfortunately, that is just life" Lizarazu explained.
Lizarazu argued that the current standoff could have been easily avoided through straightforward, honest communication regarding squad rotation, rather than sudden matchday benchings:
“There needs to be a transparent conversation between him, the manager, and the federation to ensure things go smoothly. Someone needs to look him in the eye and say: 'You are vital to me, but you will play one half in this match and in the next one, I am going to rest you.' The player must be included in the process and know precisely what is expected of him. If you tell him he is going to play and then leave him sitting on the bench, trust is broken completely”
When the engine of greatness becomes the enemy
Lizarazu concluded his critique with a blunt assessment of the personality trait that defined Ronaldo's two decade reign at the summit of world football, his relentless self-belief.
"It is because of this ego that he became Cristiano Ronaldo, because his ego drove him to work like a madman to shatter every record in the book... However, there comes a tipping point where that very ego transforms into your worst enemy. It was once your greatest strength but now it is your worst enemy because of the age you are at. If you cannot manage it, you will end up in the elephant graveyard, I assure you" Lizarazu warned.
