The new era of African Football? CAF delays roster deadlines

The CAF is evaluating a major format change for next season’s club competitions this week following a formal request from the Egyptian FA president.

Egyptian Football Association President Hany Abo Rida recently submitted a bold proposal to the Confederation of African Football. He requested a structural expansion for both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

The plan suggests granting an additional qualification seat to each member association, distributed according to the official continental club rankings and existing regulatory frameworks.

A conditional green light

The proposal has gained significant traction behind the scenes. According to the Moroccan sports platform sport7, the CAF Executive Committee has reached a preliminary consensus to support the initiative but with a major catch.

Officials are willing to expand the premier Champions League, provided the secondary Confederation Cup format remains completely untouched.

The proposal now awaits final and official ratification in the upcoming board meetings.

Deadline extension signals change

Administrative signs point toward this expansion becoming a reality. Moving beyond the theoretical study phase, the governing body is already taking procedural steps.

The CAF Competitions Committee officially postponed the final deadline for member associations to submit their participating club rosters until August. This crucial delay buys the administration the necessary time to finalize the approval process and adjust the structural blueprint for the upcoming season without disrupting domestic calendars.
