Tijjani Reijnders stands by his decision to join Saudi Arabia

Tijjani Reijnders chose to continue his career in Saudi Arabia. After just one season at Manchester City, the 28-year-old midfielder joined Al-Qadsiah. He stands by the decision, particularly because of the financial terms offered by the Saudi club.

“I can’t deny that money played a role”

According to VoetbalPrimeur, Tijjani Reijnders is set to earn around €100 million over five years with Al-Qadsiah. That salary clearly influenced his decision. Asked about the financial aspect of his choice, the Netherlands international does not seek to downplay it.

Am I attracted by money? I can’t deny it. You can always play the moral guardians, but I think everyone would have said yes to that.

The midfielder also explained that he wants to secure his future and that of his family:

I don’t want to need to work after my career. I didn’t need to after City either, but now I can also ensure that the generations who come after me will have good conditions.

A difficult season at Manchester City

Reijnders had nevertheless made a good start to his time at Manchester City after arriving from AC Milan. As the season progressed, however, his playing time decreased. During pre-season, the Dutchman had begun to consider leaving, believing that his situation was likely to remain the same.

During pre-season, I noticed that things were heading in that direction again at City, and I started asking myself whether I wanted to continue like that for another season. The honest answer was no. I wanted to look elsewhere, and the club then told me that I could do so.

He ultimately left Manchester after just one season to join Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League. Before joining Manchester City and then Al-Qadsiah, Reijnders had played for AC Milan, AZ Alkmaar, RKC Waalwijk and PEC Zwolle.
