Tottenham have officially announced the arrival of Jan Paul van Hecke, signed for around €60 million to become a cornerstone of their new defensive project.

Tottenham has secured a key piece for their rebuilding efforts. The Spurs have confirmed the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke, who joins permanently from Brighton on a long-term deal. While the clubs have not disclosed the financial details, Reuters reports the transfer of the Dutch center-back is valued at £52 million, or roughly €60 million.

A Brighton mainstay who’s come of age

Signed by Brighton in 2020 from NAC Breda, Van Hecke continued his development on loan at Heerenveen and then at Blackburn. The 26-year-old gradually established himself as a mainstay for the Seagulls, making 131 appearances in all competitions.

Last season, the Netherlands international featured in 36 Premier League matches. His 47 interceptions ranked him among the top five defenders in the league in that department. Most impressively, no player in the competition completed more line-breaking passes than he did—457 such passes. That stat underlines his pivotal role in building play from the back.

De Zerbi reunites with a perfect fit

This move sees Van Hecke reunite with Roberto De Zerbi, his former manager at Brighton. The Italian tactician played a major part in Van Hecke’s rise to the top level and knows his qualities inside out.

“He’s a powerful and intelligent center-back, courageous on the ball and plays with real personality. These are crucial qualities for the way I want to organize our team,” De Zerbi explained in the transfer announcement.

Van Hecke didn’t hide his excitement:

“It’s a huge honor to become a Spurs player. When you join such a big club, it’s a dream come true.”

His relationship with De Zerbi, along with the presence of Micky van de Ven—his national teammate—were key factors in his decision.

A signing who could transform Spurs’ defense

Beyond his Premier League experience, Van Hecke fills a precise tactical need. De Zerbi wants to build from the back, draw in the opposition press, and swiftly find his midfielders between the lines. In this setup, the Dutchman’s passing range could prove vital.

His partnership with Van de Ven also promises to be highly complementary: pace and coverage from the former, aggressiveness and progressive passing from the latter. After finishing last season in 17th place, Tottenham couldn’t settle for a minor tweak. By investing nearly €60 million in a player already attuned to his manager’s philosophy, the London club is laying the groundwork for a defensive overhaul set to change their fortunes.
