Transfer market: Ivory Coast, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal break into the top 20

The summer transfer window continues to ignite football fever across the globe. Here’s the Top 20 nationalities on which clubs have spent the most, as compiled by Transfermarkt, considering only transfers of at least one million euros.

Four African nations have carved out a spot in this ranking. They are Ivory Coast, 13th with €138M spent on 11 transfers; Morocco, 15th with €91M spent on 11 transfers; Nigeria, 18th, with an impressive €74M spent on 12 players; and Senegal, with €72M across 14 transfers.

No surprise at the top: England leads the way with €543 million spent by clubs to recruit 26 players, thanks in particular to record-breaking moves for Morgan Rogers (€138M) to Chelsea and Elliot Anderson (€135M) to Manchester City.

France sits second with €409 million invested for 40 players, powered notably by the transfer of defender Jérémy Jacquet (€63.6M). Italy completes the podium with €379 million spent on 48 players, the biggest deal being Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham for €108 million.

Spain (€377M) and Portugal (€332M) round out the Top 5, ahead of the Netherlands (€314M) and Brazil (€287M).
