Transfer market: Terem Moffi leaves Nice and joins Hamburg on a three-year deal

Terem Moffi has officially joined HSV after a challenging spell on the French Riviera. He will look to revive his career in the Bundesliga wearing the German club's colors.

OGC Nice confirmed on Monday the permanent transfer of Terem Moffi to Hamburg. After successfully passing his medical, the Nigerian striker signed a three-year contract with the German club, tying him to HSV until 2029. He becomes the club’s seventh summer signing and will wear the number 9 shirt. According to information provided about the deal, Hamburg will pay €2.5 million to Nice, including €500,000 in bonuses.

A tough ending on the Riviera

This departure marks the end of a complicated stint for Moffi at OGC Nice. Arriving from Lorient in January 2023, the center forward made an instant impact by scoring 17 goals in his first season and a half. However, things quickly became more difficult, especially due to several injuries that disrupted his progress. His relationships with certain coaches, club management, and a section of the fans deteriorated, eventually leading to his exclusion from the squad. A loan spell at FC Porto in the second half of last season failed to reignite his Nice adventure. This transfer now allows Nice to turn the page and offload a significant salary.

A profile that excites Hamburg

In Hamburg, Moffi arrives with valuable experience from several European leagues. Having played in Lithuania, Belgium, France, and Portugal, he has netted 88 goals and provided 13 assists in 228 official matches since the start of his career. A Nigerian international since 2021, he has won 23 caps, scoring six goals and delivering two assists for his country.

HSV is counting on his physical attributes and his ability to play in behind defenses.

“Terem is a striker who is difficult to contain thanks to his strength, determination, and playing style,” explained sporting director Claus Costa. He also highlighted Moffi’s presence in the box, his ability to exploit space behind defenders, and his quality with his back to goal.

Moffi, for his part, is eager to contribute to the team:

“As a striker, I love scoring goals, but I also enjoy playing for the team and maintaining group cohesion.”

After a tough spell at Nice, the Nigerian now has a fresh opportunity to rediscover his form and establish himself in a new league.
