Tunisian league, next step for Yassine Benzia?

The story between Yassine Benzia and Qarabağ FK has officially come to an end. The Azerbaijani club announced on Wednesday that the Algerian international's contract, set to expire on June 30, will not be renewed.

In a brief statement, the club expressed its gratitude to the player: “We thank Yassine Benzia for his commitment and wish him every success in the rest of his career.”

Signed in January 2023, Benzia (30) was coming back from a deeply personal ordeal. After suffering a serious car accident in May 2020, he underwent 11 surgeries and lost two fingers—a tragedy that could have ended his career.

But his determination changed everything. He returned stronger than ever, making a real impact in the Azerbaijani league: 28 goals and 25 assists in 101 appearances, including 12 goals and 10 assists just this past season. He also played a major role in Qarabağ’s three national titles during his stint.

Having refused to extend his contract, Benzia is now free to choose his next destination. And according to several Tunisian and Algerian sources, the Tunisian league is emerging as a strong possibility, with Espérance Sportive de Tunis showing keen interest.

The Bab Souika club, eager to bolster their squad with experienced and high-performing players, sees Benzia as the perfect fit. The presence of fellow Algerians Youcef Belaïli and Mohamed Amine Tougaï could also help him settle quickly into the EST locker room.
