U20 Women’s World Cup: Ghana bounce back against South Korea

On Matchday 2 of the group stage of the Women’s U20 World Cup, Ghana got the better of South Korea. The Black Princesses won 3-1 and kept their qualification hopes alive ahead of their final match.

The decisive moment came in the second half

Having dominated the first half, Ghana were held at bay by a solid South Korean side. After the break, the Black Princesses launched another assault on the opposition’s defence. Their efforts were rewarded in the 52nd minute when captain Sarah Nyarko opened the scoring. The South Koreans had no time to recover. Three minutes later, Ivy Owusu Osei capitalised on the confusion to double the lead.

The Ghanaian substitutes made the difference

In the 84th minute, Ghana delivered the final blow. Following a pass from Angel Akanyirige, substitute Ruth Amponsah finished the move to make it 3–0. In stoppage time, South Korea salvaged some pride. Beom Yeju pulled one back, but it did nothing to alter the result.

The Black Princesses ran out 3–1 winners. With this victory, Ghana are back in contention following their opening 0–3 defeat to Ecuador. The Black Princesses will play for qualification in their next match against France. South Korea, meanwhile, will need to beat Ecuador to stand any chance of progressing.
