UEFA Champions League: two new rules introduced to the competition

This Tuesday, UEFA announced two changes that will apply across all three European competitions. The governing body communicated these updates to all member federations and clubs.

According to UEFA, starting from the 2026-2027 season, players and staff members will be automatically suspended for one match after accumulating four yellow cards that do not result in a red card. Previously, a suspension was triggered after three yellow cards.

Under the new regulations, further suspensions will be imposed for every two additional yellow cards. Players will therefore also be suspended after their sixth, eighth, tenth booking, and so on.

These two changes will apply to all three European competitions. The league phase of the Champions League kicks off on September 8. The Europa League starts on September 16, and the Conference League will begin on October 15.
