UFOA-B U20: Burkina Faso books a spot in the final after 2-0 win over Niger
The U20 Stallions broke through Niger’s defense. After a tense, tightly contested match, Burkina Faso emerged victorious 2-0 in the semi-final of the UFOA-B tournament, qualifying for the 2027 U20 AFCON in Ghana. It took extra time for the deadlock to be broken.
Breakthrough in extra time
At Stade Konan Bany in Yamoussoukro, Niger held firm for a long time. Disciplined and resolute, the U20 Mena withstood Burkina Faso’s attacks for 90 minutes. But the difference came in extra time. Exhausted, the Nigerians finally cracked. On two moves orchestrated by Mohamed Zongo, Sie Eric Stéphane Ouattara and then Halidou Diakité found the net to secure qualification.
With two decisive assists, Mohamed Zongo was deservedly named man of the match. That’s already his third award in four matches, with two goals and four assists to his name.
A strong run and a final against Nigeria
Unbeaten since the start of the tournament, Oscar Barro’s side kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 win over Togo, followed by a 1-1 draw against Ghana and a 2-0 victory over Nigeria in the group stage.
As for Niger, their campaign ends after three matches: a 1-0 win over Benin, a 0-2 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire, and this semi-final exit.
In the final, Burkina Faso will meet Nigeria, who knocked out Côte d’Ivoire. The stakes couldn’t be higher: only the champion will secure that coveted ticket for the 2027 U20 AFCON in Ghana.
