UFOA B U20: The Étalons defeat Nigeria 2-0 to claim top spot in Group B
The Burkina Faso U20 Étalons got the job done. On Sunday, Burkina Faso secured a 2-0 victory over Nigeria in the third matchday of the UFOA B tournament, a qualifier for the 2027 U20 AFCON. With this win, Oscar Barro’s men finish at the top of Group B and punch their ticket to the semi-finals against Niger.
A blazing start from the Étalons
Burkina Faso didn’t let Nigeria settle. In the 23rd minute, Alassane Bakayoko opened the scoring with a powerful header from a perfectly delivered corner. The lead didn’t last long, though. In the 36th minute, Mohamed Zongo stepped up. From about 30 meters out, he curled a direct free kick right into the top corner past the Flying Eagles’ keeper. Two chances, two goals. The Étalons headed to the locker room with a well-deserved 2-0 lead and total control of the match.
A controlled second half
After the break, Nigeria tried to respond and get back into the game. But the Burkinabè defense stayed solid, disciplined, and compact. Not a single real chance was conceded. The Étalons managed their lead with maturity, holding firm until the final whistle without a hint of nerves.
7 points and first place secured
This victory wraps up a perfect group stage for Burkina Faso. After a 3-1 win over Togo and a 1-1 draw with Ghana, the Étalons finish unbeaten with 7 points. They top the group and qualify directly for the semi-finals.
Nigeria are not out of the tournament yet. Despite the defeat, the Flying Eagles qualify by finishing second in Group B thanks to their wins—3-1 against Ghana and 3-0 against Togo.
Both teams are now closing in on their ultimate goal: punching their ticket for the 2027 U20 AFCON in Ghana.
