The United States and Senegal are finalizing a friendly match that will slot directly into the final phase of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup. The fixture is scheduled for May 31 on American soil, just about ten days before the tournament kicks off.

An agreement almost reached

Talks between the two federations have been progressing for several days, with the framework of the deal already in place. Only a few logistical details remain—most notably, the choice of stadium—before this first-ever clash between the two nations can be officially confirmed. The timing fits perfectly with the ramp-up planned ahead of the World Cup.

Senegal already settled in the United States

The first contacts were established right after the World Cup draw on December 5 in Washington. The United States, co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, will compete in Group D alongside Paraguay, Australia, and a European playoff winner.
Senegal, meanwhile, finds itself in Group I with a tough start: opening against France and then Norway in New Jersey, before a third match in Toronto against the winner of the intercontinental playoffs.

Other teams fine-tune their schedules

While this agreement nears completion, direct rivals are also making moves. France has secured two high-profile friendlies in March—against Brazil in Foxborough, then Colombia in Washington.
Norway has lined up a clash with the Netherlands on March 27, followed by a home fixture against Switzerland four days later in Oslo.

A fitting test for two ambitious teams

For both the United States and Senegal, playing on May 31 makes perfect sense. The level, timing, and context would all be ideal for measuring up against a World Cup-caliber opponent in an atmosphere closely resembling that of the tournament itself.
