Uruguay: Diego Forlán hospitalized

At 46, Diego Forlán still laces up his boots for the sheer love of the game. But this time, a friendly match among mates took a serious turn after a heavy collision.

The legendary Uruguayan striker was rushed to hospital following a clash during a veterans’ match in Uruguay’s university league. According to El País, he suffered three broken ribs and a pneumothorax. While his life is not in danger, Forlán faces a spell of rehabilitation before he can return to any sporting activity.

Forlán is a football icon, having left his mark at clubs like Manchester United, Villarreal, and Atlético Madrid. With the Uruguayan national team, he finished as top scorer and fourth overall at the 2010 World Cup. Since hanging up his boots in 2019, he’s shifted his focus to coaching and recreational sports, including tennis, and continues to take part in veterans’ matches to stay active.
