(Video) Bee swarm brings football final to a sudden stop
A massive swarm of bees brought the Bahia U20 State Championship final to an abrupt and terrifying halt leaving players, coaches and match officials lying completely flat on the pitch.
The bizarre incident occurred just 11 minute into the first leg of the U20 final between Bahia & Fluminense de Feira, hosted at the Estádio Joia da Princesa in Feira de Santana. Without warning, a dense cloud of bees descended directly onto the field and swarmed around the television cameras broadcasting the game.
Realizing the danger, the referee immediately suspended play and the players on the pitch were ordered to lie motionless on the grass to minimize their risk of being stung.
Sprinklers to the Rescue
As the buzzing swarm refused to disperse, stadium staff were forced to intervene creatively. In a desperate attempt to clear the air, groundskeepers activated the stadium's automated pitch sprinkler system.
The water effectively broke up the swarm and after a tense 10 minute delay, conditions were deemed safe enough for the players to return to their feet and resume the match.
A nightmare return to action for Bahia
While the bees eventually departed, the nightmare was just beginning for Bahia. Once play restarted, Fluminense de Feira absolutely dismantled their shell shocked opponents.
The hosts ruthlessly capitalized on the disjointed atmosphere thrashing Bahia 8-0 in a staggering first leg rout.
