Vozinha: his name now linked to a scientific discovery

Vozinha didn't just make headlines at the 2026 World Cup with his saves. The 40-year-old Cape Verdean goalkeeper has now received a truly unique honor from the scientific community following his outstanding run with the Blue Sharks.

According to The Athletic, a newly discovered species of marine mollusk has been named after the Cape Verdean shot-stopper by Spanish biologist Jesús Ortea. This is a remarkable distinction for a player who became one of the standout figures in the Blue Sharks’ historic journey.

Vozinha was one of the standout performers in this summer’s World Cup, and now the Cape Verde goalkeeper has been recognised by having a newly-discovered species named in his honour.

At 40, Vozinha impressed throughout the tournament and played a key role in helping Cape Verde reach the knockout stage. In their first-ever World Cup appearance, the West African squad managed to advance from a tough group featuring Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, before bowing out to Argentina in a spectacular round of 16 clash (3-2 after extra time).
