The coach of Egypt’s Al Ahly ,Houcine Ammouta, adopted a neutral position regarding the comparison between the Cairo derby and the Casablanca derby.

Cairo or Casablanca derby: Ammouta gives his verdict

The former Jordan manager refused to favour the derby between Al Ahly and Zamalek over the clash between Wydad and Raja, stressing that each fixture has its own identity and a unique atmosphere.

His statement came after he led Al Ahly to a 2-0 victory over Zamalek in the sixth round of the Egyptian Premier League, on the occasion of the Moroccan coach’s first Egyptian derby.

Speaking about the atmosphere surrounding the Egyptian clash, Houcine Ammouta stressed during the post-match press conference the central role of supporters in the success of major fixtures: “The supporters are the secret behind the success of derbies everywhere in the world.”

The Al Ahly coach also highlighted the remarkable presence of both teams’ supporters in the stands of Cairo Stadium:

“ Al Ahly and Zamalek supporters created magnificent scenes before and during today’s match. Despite that, I believe the Casablanca derby has a special flavour. The supporters are always present in large numbers, with attendances reaching 60,000 or 65,000 spectators. You can see the magnificent scenes they create. ”

When asked to choose between the two fixtures, Ammouta simply replied: “I cannot prefer one derby over the other.”

It should be noted that Al Ahly’s victory over their traditional rivals allowed them to temporarily move top of the Egyptian league with 16 points, one point ahead of Pyramids, who will face Ceramica Cleopatra on Monday.
