Cairo derby: Al Ahly–Zamalek refereeing trio revealed
The Egyptian Football Association announced on Monday the appointment of a Slovenian refereeing team to officiate the highly anticipated derby between Al Ahly and Zamalek, scheduled for next Sunday as part of the Premier League championship phase.
A Slovenian referee to officiate Al Ahly–Zamalek
The Egyptian Football Association stated in a statement published on its official Facebook account that Slovenian international referee Rade Obrenović would be in charge of officiating the fixture. He will be assisted by compatriots Jure Praprotnik and Grega Kordež.
David Šmajc will serve as the fourth official, while Matej Jug will be in charge of video assistance (VAR), with David Gabr serving as the assistant VAR.
Obrenović is one of UEFA’s elite referees and has held international referee status since 2017. He has also officiated several matches at continental and international level.
His most recent match between national teams took place on September 28, 2026, when he officiated the Nations League match between Belgium and France. Les Bleus won 1-0.
In the standings, Pyramids currently sit top with 15 points after winning their first five matches. Zamalek are second with 13 points, ahead of third-placed Al Ahly, who have the same number of points but trail on goal difference.
