The IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics) has named Slavko Vinčić as the best referee of the 2026 World Cup. The organization praised the Slovenian's performances throughout the tournament, culminating in his appointment to officiate the final between Spain and Argentina—a nomination widely seen as a sign of FIFA's trust.

Strong numbers, a divisive decision

In total, Slavko Vinčić took charge of four matches during the 2026 World Cup. He notably officiated Brazil vs. Jordan, Mexico vs. Morocco, and Mexico vs. Ecuador before being selected for the final. Across these four fixtures, the Slovenian handed out 12 yellow cards and 2 red cards.

This award, however, is not without controversy. After the final, several pundits argued that some of Vinčić’s decisions had a significant impact on the outcome of the match. Some would have preferred another referee to receive the honor. Nevertheless, the IFFHS explained that they considered his overall performance throughout the tournament, highlighting his composure, authority, and consistency in enforcing the laws of the game.
