'Why I joined Mamelodi Sundowns' - Brayan Leon

Newly signed Mamelodi Sundowns striker Brayan Leon Muniz has opened up on his move to the reigning Betway Premiership champions.

The 25-year-old Colombian star signed for the Tshwane giants from Independiente Medellin in native country, in a reported deal worth in the region of $3.5 million (R57 million).

Leon comes with incredible credentials as he scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 matches across all competitions for Independiente in 2025.

With over 200 appearances and 48 goals with 30 assists, the Colombia international is set to provide fierce competition for Iqraam Rayners, Peter Shalulile, and Lebo Mothiba in the Downs no.9 role.

Speaking to Sundowns' media team on his unveiling, Leon says he opted to join the Brazilians because he believes they are the best and most successful club in South Africa and can offer trophies.

“I chose Sundowns because of the new challenge. I think this is the best team, the most successful and well, I think it's always great to have these new challenges and to be a champions here,” he said.

"I really hope to return the favour. I already mentioned that Sundowns is the most successful team, I think that's what I'm here for - to win, to reap titles and to make it bigger than it already is.

In addition to Leon, Sundowns have completed the blockbuster signing of Monnapule Saleng from Orlando Pirates, while Khulumani Ndamane also joined from TS Galaxy.

It remains to be seen whether the new acquisitions will make their debuts when Miguel Cardoso's men return to Betway Premiership action with a clash against Orbit College on 20 January.
