World Cup 2026 (Q): Assane Diao's choice makes waves in the Spanish press

Torn between Spain and Senegal, Assane Diao has ultimately opted for the Lions of Teranga. A strong choice applauded by Senegalese fans, yet not well-received in Spain.

Between Spain and Senegal, Assane Diao has made his decision. The 18-year-old prodigy has chosen to don the colors of the Lions of Teranga. He is already on Pape Thiaw's list to compete in the 5th and 6th rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the Senegalese national team. This decision by Assane Diao has notably caused frustration in Spain, where he completed his training and reached the top level.

According to reports, the daily Marca refers to it as a "theft" when discussing Assane Diao's choice. The Spanish media believes that the young player was influenced by Senegalese sports officials and did not make the decision on his own. Speaking about his development, José Miguel from Marca states:

With Assane Diao, it's clear that he has the potential to join the senior team, but he needs to go through steps he doesn't intend to take while Senegal has opened its arms to him.

While the Spanish press grumbles over Assane Diao's choice to represent Senegal, his coach at Como, Cesc Fabregas, had already foreseen this scenario, indirectly stating that La Roja had little chance of having Diao in its ranks. "He has to choose, it's difficult, but it's also good because he deserves it. He has to manage this mentally," he declared. In a young team led by a coach with many projects, Assane Diao could quickly seize the opportunity to become one of the privileged members of the Lions of Teranga's den.
