World Cup 2026 (Q): Ivory Coast takes the lead!
In a buzzing Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, Ivory Coast secured a hard-fought but crucial victory against Gambia (1-0) on Monday during the sixth matchday of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
Thanks to an inspired Sébastien Haller and a monumental Yahia Fofana, the Elephants solidify their status as serious contenders for the top spot in Group F.
Haller, a striking comeback
The star striker Haller's comeback lit up the match. Served with a pinpoint cross from Simon Adingra, the Elephants' spearhead headed an unstoppable shot into the left corner (15th minute).
A reminiscent moment of his legendary goal during the CAN 2024 final, confirming his status as a penalty box predator. Video:
Fofana, the last barrier
Gambia, far from giving up, attempted to shake the Ivorian wall. However, Fofana, dazzling as the goalkeeper for the night, made several crucial saves, notably deflecting a tricky cross-shot before the break and thwarting the final opposing attempts.
The Ivorian opportunities were plentiful, but finishing was lacking. Haller, despite being combative, couldn't extend the lead, while the crossbar denied a shot from Diomandé.
At the final whistle, Ivory Coast could savor their success. While the Elephants reclaim the lead of the group ahead of Gabon, Gambia sees their qualification hopes fade, leaving behind disappointment.
Below is the Group F standings:
- Ivory Coast: 16 Points
- Gabon: 15 Points
- Burundi: 7 Points
- Kenya: 6 Points
- Gambia: 4 Points
- Seychelles: 0 Point
