World Cup 2026 (Q): Marc Brys and the controversy surrounding the Cameroonian Ballon d'Or
World Cup 2026 (Q): Marc Brys and the controversy surrounding the Cameroonian Ballon d'Or

The absence of the great revelation of Cameroonian football, Nchindo John Bosco, the recent winner of the Cameroonian Ballon d'Or, from the Indomitable Lions' squad for the matches against Eswatini and Libya raises many questions. Marc Brys tried to justify his choice... without dispelling doubts.

"I don't live here!"

When questioned at a press conference about the absence of the Yong Sports striker, the Belgian coach surprised with his response:

"I don't live here, I work here and there are times when I'm not here. So it's my assistants who follow the local league matches."

This statement reignites the debate on the attention given to talents playing in the Cameroonian league.

A justifiable choice?

Brys claims to have watched some game footage of Nchindo John Bosco but believes the player did not impress during a previous call-up:

"When he was with us, he unfortunately couldn't adapt and was too nervous. His Ballon d'Or will give him confidence, and that's what he was lacking."

While some consider this explanation legitimate, others denounce a lack of recognition for local football. Why wouldn't a player crowned the best footballer in the country have a place in the national team, while some out-of-form expatriates continue to be called up?

A persistent discomfort

This controversy revives a recurring question in Africa: can a foreign coach effectively manage a national team without living in the country?

Brys's admission fuels criticism against these coaches who, due to the lack of daily oversight, seem disconnected from local football.
