World Cup 2026 (Q): Regragui explains Hakim Ziyech's absence

Walid Regragui made a bold decision not to call up Hakim Ziyech for the upcoming two matchdays of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Moroccan coach did not hesitate to explain the reasons behind the absence of the former Chelsea midfielder this Thursday in a press conference.

It's rare to see Hakim Ziyech absent from the Moroccan national team gathering. He has been one of the pillars of the Atlas Lions. But this statement is gradually becoming a thing of the past. Indeed, Walid Regragui did not call upon the 31-year-old player for the 5th and 6th matchdays of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the Atlas Lions. This was also the case in November 2024. Hakim Ziyech's last call-up dates back to September 2024 during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

In response to growing concerns from fans and observers, Walid Regragui was clear about Ziyech's situation. "Hakim Ziyech is a great player who has contributed a lot to the national team. He will always be important for the team. But he needs to return to form. I went to Doha to watch the Al Duhail vs. Al Sadd match and to follow Hakim Ziyech and Romain Saiss. During this match, Ziyech was a substitute. And he's only played 90 minutes in two games. I have decisions to make. Our goal today is to have Ziyech at the top of his game.

Regragui's goal is to see Ziyech back in top form. It's now up to the player to give his best at his club to convince the technical staff in order to make his return at the next gathering.
