World Cup 2026 (Q): Senegal's Lions slowed down in their race!
The Lions hit a major obstacle! This Saturday, Senegal could not do better than a draw against a determined Sudanese team (0-0) at the Stade des Martyrs in Benghazi, Libya, for the fifth day of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
With exemplary resistance, the Nile Crocodiles confirmed that their place as leaders of Group B is well-deserved.
From the first minutes, the Lions almost capitalized on a mistake by goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa, who nevertheless distinguished himself with several crucial saves afterward.
Senegal dominated possession but faced a compact and disciplined Sudanese defense. The best chance for the opposition came in the 21st minute when a Sudanese striker, after outwitting Edouard Mendy, lacked precision and shot wide.
Sterile domination
Despite clear dominance, Pape Thiaw's men struggled with finishing. In the 55th minute, captain Sadio Mané sent an overhead kick over the crossbar, missing a golden opportunity.
Sudan continued to threaten on the counter, but like Walieldin Khidir in the 77th minute, lacked offensive precision.
Qualification in jeopardy
This point-sharing allows Sudan to maintain its leadership with 11 points. Senegal, third with 9 points, sees its qualification ambitions weakened.
To stay in the race, the Lions will have to win against Togo on Tuesday, while Sudan will face off against its South Sudanese neighbor.
Below is the Group B standings for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Africa Zone:
- Sudan: 11 pts
- DR Congo: 10 pts
- Senegal: 9 pts
- Togo: 4 pts
- Mauritania: 2 pts
- South Sudan: 2 pts
