Zitha Kwinika makes bullish Kaizer Chiefs claim

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika has made a bullish declaration about the Glamour Boys' mandate under head coach Fernando da Cruz, with the 2026/27 campaign gathering steam.

Amakhosi finished the previous season in third place on the Betway Premiership standings, having accumulated 54 points under the tutelage of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

In the ongoing term, Chiefs currently sit third with eight points amassed from the opening four matches, and crashed out in the first round of the MTN8, where they fell short to Golden Arrows.

Despite surrendering the first piece of silverware, Kwinika says the team is approaching this season with a winning mentality, backing Chiefs to compete for the major honours still on offer.

“I think in this season to be honest we're going with the mentality of going there and compete. We're Kaizer Chiefs, we have to compete and we have a chance, we're going out there,” said the Chiefs stalwart.

With Chiefs proving leaky at the back, contrary to last season, the 32-year-old centre-half sees a silver lining in the manner in which the team is conceding goals, but insists errors must be eradicated as they look to notch up more shutouts.

“It's a matter of getting things properly. I understand clean sheets is what we want and what we take in this is how we concede goals. It's not like people go through us and that will be a factor in saying we don't have a good structure,” Kwinika added.

"So, how we are conceding goals is just a matter of small things that need to be fixed going forward.

Chiefs will be looking for their second clean sheet across all competitions when they host Siwelele FC at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday, with the Bloemfontein-based outfit in search of their first win of the season.
