2026 World Cup: Dutch player ruled out for the Oranje
A major setback for the Netherlands ahead of their second group stage match at the 2026 World Cup. Midfielder Quinten Timber has suffered a concussion during training and will miss the match against Sweden, scheduled for Saturday in Houston. His absence could extend beyond this fixture, depending on how his condition evolves.
The incident occurred on Thursday, June 17, during a Dutch training session. According to initial reports from the staff, the player was involved in an accidental collision during a team exercise. He received immediate medical attention and was placed under the concussion protocol, ruling him out of action right away.
"A blow to the head is always dangerous, you have to be extremely careful," explained Dutch midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.
A Dutch squad already depleted
This is another blow for head coach Ronald Koeman, who has had to deal with several absences since the start of the tournament. Quinten Timber, who did not start the opening match against Japan but played around twenty minutes in the second half, was considered a reliable option in midfield rotation.
The Olympique de Marseille player now joins the list of Dutch absentees in this tournament, which has already seen several key injuries.
A family plagued by injuries
This situation also highlights the Timber family's injury woes. Defender Jurrien Timber, Quinten's brother, was also forced to withdraw from the competition due to a groin injury. A third brother, Dylan Timber, plays for Curaçao's national team, but was not called up for the World Cup.
Sportingly, this absence comes at a crucial moment in the group stage. The Netherlands, who drew their opening game against Japan, must respond against Sweden to secure qualification.
The medical and coaching staff, however, remain cautious, prioritizing the player's health above any sporting considerations. The duration of his absence has not yet been officially announced.
