2026 World Cup: friendly match in Florida delayed by severe weather

The warm-up friendly for the 2026 World Cup between England and Costa Rica was delayed by 30 minutes this Wednesday in Orlando, Florida.

Originally scheduled for 10 p.m. (local reference time announced), kickoff was postponed due to heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning affecting the Orlando area. Organizers put the safety of players, officials, and fans first before resuming any activities on the pitch.

Safety comes first

Images broadcast before the match showed particularly poor weather conditions around the Inter&Co Stadium, the venue set to host this final rehearsal for the Three Lions ahead of the World Cup opener.

In accordance with U.S. protocols for outdoor sporting events, the presence of lightning near the stadium led authorities to temporarily suspend operations and delay the kickoff.

This match is a key warm-up test for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who are looking to fine-tune their tactics before kicking off their 2026 World Cup campaign. Supporters of both teams will have to wait a little longer before the action gets underway.
