Ghana made World Cup history by securing a 1-0 victory over Panama with a last-gasp goal. This win, the sixth for the Black Stars in World Cup finals, allows them to match the African record for most victories, previously held solely by Nigeria.

Ghana has now equaled the record for World Cup wins by an African team. Thanks to their victory over Panama, the Black Stars have reached 6 wins in 16 matches, matching Nigeria, who achieved the same tally in 21 games. Ghana’s World Cup triumphs began in 2006 with a victory over the Czech Republic (2-0), followed by a win against the United States (2-1) that earned them a spot in the round of 16.

In 2010, the Black Stars once again overcame the United States (2-1 after extra time) to reach the quarter-finals. Four years later in Brazil, they defeated Portugal (2-1) in their final group match. It wasn’t until the 2022 edition that Ghana returned to winning ways, pulling off a dramatic 3-2 victory over South Korea. Now, Panama joins this prestigious list.

Tied with Nigeria at six wins, Ghana now stands on the brink of becoming the most successful African team in World Cup history with just one more victory at this 2026 tournament.
