2027 AFCON qualifiers: Ebrima Colley joins Marshall Munetsi at the top of the scoring charts

Ebrima Colley has joined Marshall Munetsi among the leading scorers in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The Gambian forward now has three goals after two matchdays, thanks to his brace in Gambia’s 4-2 victory over Ghana on Tuesday in Accra.

Gambia had nevertheless made a very poor start to the match. Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 27th minute before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the lead six minutes later. The Scorpions responded before half-time through Muhammed Badamosi, also from the penalty spot, then Omar Colley, who equalised in the 42nd minute.

Ebrima Colley turns the game around against Ghana

Gambia eventually made the difference after the break. Ebrima Colley put his side ahead in the 68th minute before scoring his second goal of the evening in stoppage time to seal the 4-2 victory.

The brace takes his tally to three goals in these qualifiers. The forward had already scored on the opening matchday against Somalia, converting a penalty in the 18th minute during Gambia’s 2-1 victory on September 25.

With this second win in two matches, Gambia now have six points in Group C. The Scorpions began their campaign with a victory over Somalia before beating Ghana in Accra.

Munetsi remains on three goals

Marshall Munetsi had reached three goals by the second matchday. The Zimbabwean midfielder scored twice in Zimbabwe’s spectacular comeback against Sierra Leone (3-2), after falling 2-0 behind. He scored in the 72nd and 88th minutes.

The 29-year-old also found the net on the second matchday against DR Congo. His goal in the 90+3rd minute reduced the deficit, but it did not prevent Zimbabwe from losing 2-1.

After two matchdays, Ebrima Colley and Marshall Munetsi therefore have three goals each. They are among the players at the top of the scoring charts in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, alongside Bienvenue Kanakimana and Ali Sulieman, who have also been credited with three goals.
