Argentine forward Julian Alvarez could join FC Barcelona this summer but transfer negotiations have stalled following a reported internal dispute with the Atletico Madrid hierarchy over his public transfer request.

What happened: The public transfer request

According to Spanish outlet Sport, citing Argentine journalist Martin Arevalo, Atletico Madrid's management initially encouraged Alvarez's camp to publicly announce his desire to leave the club.

During private discussions regarding a potential move to Catalonia, the Atletico board reportedly asked the 26 year old to make his intentions clear to the media. The strategy was designed to protect the club's image.

"The goal was for the public to understand that the decision to leave came from the player and not the club.. Julian followed this advice and announced during the World Cup his desire for a change for the first time" the report detailed.

However, the situation deteriorated shortly after. The Atletico board allegedly reacted poorly to the public statements they had orchestrated, abruptly changing their stance and declaring that the striker is not for sale.

Barcelona's attacking void

The stand off in Madrid presents a complicated situation for Barcelona. Following the recent departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, the Catalan side are actively searching for a proven elite goalscorer to lead their line.

Manager Hansi Flick has been forced to rely on promising young Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim during recent pre season friendlies.

Acquiring a player of Alvarez's calibre would immediately solve Barcelona's attacking issues. The Argentine registered 20 goal in 49 appearances across all competitions for Atletico last season proving his reliability and physical durability in Spanish football.
