Tunisia head coach Sami Trabelsi believes his side’s opening victory at the Africa Cup of Nations will serve as major psychological boost as they prepare to face Nigeria in their crucial Group C encounter on Saturday.

The Carthage Eagles kicked off their AFCON campaign with impressive 3-1 win over Uganda moving top of the group on goal difference ahead of Nigeria who edged Tanzania 2-1 in their opening match.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Trabelsi stressed the importance of building momentum early in the tournament.

“Playing the second match after winning the first one is certainly big motivation for the players and gives them greater confidence,” Trabelsi said. “Tomorrow we face one of the strongest national teams in Africa. We are determined to achieve a positive result that will help us qualify for the next round before the final group match against Tanzania.”

World Cup Qualification won’t matter, says Tunisia boss

Asked whether Tunisia’s qualification for the next FIFA World Cup unlike Nigeria, gives his side an edge, Trabelsi dismissed the idea.

“Our qualification for the World Cup and Nigeria’s failure to qualify gives us no advantage,” he explained. “We don’t deal with assumptions. We deal with seriousness and focus in every match and against every opponent.”

Focus & discipline the Key to progress

The 57 year old coach highlighted concentration and discipline as the foundations for success warning that the tournament remains long and demanding.

“The most important thing is to maintain focus and discipline on the pitch and to build on the winning spirit within the team,” he added. “The journey in this competition is still long. We must move step by step without thinking too far ahead.”

No Changes expected

Trabelsi also confirmed that all players are fit and available and hinted strongly that he will stick with the same lineup that defeated Uganda.

“All players are in good health and ready,” he said. “We don’t change a winning team.”

A positive result against Nigeria would put Tunisia in strong position to secure early qualification for the knockout stage.
