AFCON 2027: Algeria, the new host country?

Algeria could be among the countries capable of taking over the organization of AFCON 2027 if the three current hosts encounter too many difficulties.

A new scenario is raising questions about AFCON 2027. According to information published by Le Monde, the Confederation of African Football is closely monitoring the delays accumulated in preparations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The French newspaper claims that several replacement solutions are being considered behind the scenes in case the three host countries ultimately prove unable to meet the organizational requirements.

Algeria among five countries capable of taking over

Saïd Ali Saïd Athouman, president of the Comoros Football Federation, believes that five African nations currently have the resources needed to take on such a challenge: Algeria, Morocco, South Africa, Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire. According to Le Monde, the CAF may have already sounded out Morocco, South Africa and Algeria about a possible contingency plan.

For now, the CAF has announced no official decision to relocate the tournament. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania therefore remain the hosts of the 2027 edition. This is solely a contingency scenario being examined because of the progress of the work.

Seven Algerian stadiums already approved by the CAF

Algeria has a significant argument in its favor: in June, the CAF approved seven venues to host the matches involving the Fennecs during the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. They are Miloud-Hadefi Stadium in Oran, 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba, Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki, 5 July 1962 Stadium in Algiers, Ali Ammar Stadium, also known as Ali La Pointe Stadium, in Douéra, Chahid-Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine and Hocine-Aït-Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou.

These modern or renovated venues, spread across several major cities, give Algeria a solid foundation if an emergency bid were to be genuinely considered. The country also has airports, hotels and training centers capable of supporting a major continental event.
