George Ilenikhena could miss Nigeria’s match against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, in the second round of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. The striker is dealing with a physical issue and his starting berth remains uncertain.

Éric Chelle confirmed on Monday that the young Nigerian striker was not guaranteed to start the match.

“George is injured, so I cannot confirm whether he will start in the starting XI or not,” explained the Super Eagles head coach, leaving the decision open until the final hours before kick-off.

This uncertainty comes after Ilenikhena made an immediate impression on his first appearance for the Nigerian national team. Starting against Madagascar in the first round of the qualifiers on Friday, September 25, the striker scored Nigeria’s equaliser in first-half stoppage time. The Super Eagles ultimately won 2-1.

For his first cap, the 19-year-old had therefore immediately found the back of the net. He started the match before being substituted in the 69th minute.

Ilenikhena has since become the subject of questions surrounding Nigeria’s attack. His presence in training and his physical condition are being monitored by Chelle’s staff. The coach will have to decide whether he can field the goalscorer from the first round against Guinea-Bissau or whether he will have to do without him at kick-off.

Nigeria head into this second round with the aim of confirming their victory over Madagascar. Another win would allow the Super Eagles to continue their campaign in the group with six points after two matches.
