AFCON 2027 (Q): Gambia mobilises 13 million for its national team

The Gambia national team has received financial support from the authorities ahead of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. Gambian media outlet Gambiana reports that the government has released 13 million dalasis, approximately 177,000 dollars, to the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) to cover expenses related to the campaign.

Funding to cover the national team’s expenses

Provided through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the funding will help finance the Scorpions’ preparations, particularly logistical expenses and the costs associated with their participation in the qualifying matches.

This support comes ahead of a series of crucial matches for Gambia, which is aiming to secure a place in the final tournament of AFCON 2027.

A challenging group for the Scorpions

The Ministry of Youth and Sports stressed that this contribution reflects the authorities’ commitment to football and sports development in the country. Gambia will compete in Group C of the qualifiers alongside Somalia, Ghana and Ivory Coast. It began its qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Somalia.

This funding should therefore allow the Scorpions to approach their campaign in better conditions, with the aim of securing qualification for AFCON 2027. The final tournament is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, and will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
