Ghana: Carlos Queiroz leaves Black Stars by mutual consent (official)
The relationship between Carlos Queiroz and Ghana has come to an end. The Ghana Football Association and the coach have decided by mutual consent to terminate their collaboration, announcing the end of his stint at the helm of the Black Stars.
Split after disastrous defeat
The split comes after the Black Stars suffered a disastrous defeat, losing 2-4 to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium in the second round of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. In the past 51 years, Ghana had never lost an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match by three goals or more.
This was their second consecutive defeat, following the 0-2 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in the opening round at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké. In a message addressed to the Ghana Football Association, the players and the Ghanaian people, the Portuguese coach acknowledged the end of his tenure.
A wholly inadequate record
The 73-year-old Portuguese coach, who took charge amid high expectations, led the Black Stars in just six competitive matches, recording one win, one draw and four defeats. His only victory came against Panama (1-0) in the opening round of the 2026 World Cup.
