Ghana: Carlos Queiroz leaves door open to resignation after defeat to Gambia

Carlos Queiroz did not rule out the possibility of resigning after the heavy defeat suffered by Ghana against Gambia (4-2) on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Beaten for the second time in two rounds of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, the Portuguese coach left it to the Ghana Football Association to decide his future.

Asked about a possible resignation after this latest setback, Carlos Queiroz left the door open to that possibility, without announcing his departure.

“If my resignation is the solution for Ghanaian football, I will be the first to resign. But this is a decision I will leave to the federation,” the coach said after the match.

The statement comes as the Black Stars endure a particularly difficult start to their Group C campaign. Ghana had already lost its opening match against Côte d’Ivoire (2-0) before suffering another defeat against Gambia.

The defeat against the Scorpions is all the more damaging because Ghana conceded four goals. After two rounds, the Ghanaian national team has therefore still failed to earn a point in these qualifiers.

Carlos Queiroz did not present his resignation as a decision that has already been made. His message instead suggests that he will accept the Ghana Football Association’s decision if its officials believe that a change of coach could revive the campaign.

Ghana will now have to try to respond in the coming rounds to avoid further jeopardizing its chances in these qualifiers. Carlos Queiroz’s future will also depend on the decisions made by the federation’s officials after this latest setback.
