AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Marshall Munetsi provisionally leads the scoring charts

Marshall Munetsi now sits alone at the top of the scoring charts in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. The Zimbabwe midfielder scored his team's goal against DR Congo on Monday, 28 September in Harare, taking his tally to three goals after two matchdays.

Trailing 2-0 after goals from Yoane Wissa and Samuel Moutoussamy, the Warriors pulled one back in stoppage time. In the 90th+3 minute, Munetsi revived Zimbabwe's hopes by scoring to make it 2-1. DR Congo ultimately held on to their advantage and secured a second win in two matches.

Munetsi moves ahead of Wissa, Dorgelès and Orebonye

With three goals, Marshall Munetsi now occupies the outright top spot in the scoring charts for these qualifiers. He leads Yoane Wissa, Nene Dorgelès and Tumisang Orebonye, who have each scored twice at this stage of the competition.

The Zimbabwean midfielder had already scored twice on the opening matchday. Against Sierra Leone on 24 September, he scored his team's second and third goals in the 72nd and 88th minutes, contributing to Zimbabwe's 3-2 victory. The competition statistics do indeed record two goals for Munetsi in that first match.

Munetsi has therefore scored in Zimbabwe's first two matches in these qualifiers. His goal against DR Congo has above all allowed him to take sole command of the scoring charts after the opening matches of the second matchday.

Five goals for Zimbabwe

This latest goal takes his total for the Zimbabwe national team to five. Before this campaign, Munetsi had scored twice for the Warriors, including once in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and once in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Benin.

His three goals in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers therefore account for more than half of his international total. At 30, the Wolverhampton midfielder is also enjoying his most prolific campaign with Zimbabwe since making his international debut.

Two goals for Wolverhampton

Munetsi has also made a decisive contribution for Wolverhampton since the start of the 2026-2027 season. He has scored two goals in the Championship, first against Blackburn Rovers on 14 August, then against West Ham on 1 September.

His goal against Blackburn came as early as the 18th minute on the opening day of the league season. He then found the net in the 44th minute against West Ham, despite the Wolves' 4-2 defeat.

His tally since the start of the 2026-2027 campaign therefore stands at five goals across international competitions and league football: two for Wolverhampton and three for Zimbabwe in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. His season statistics with the Wolves also record two goals in the Championship.
