Guinea host Kenya in Conakry this Thursday in the only match of the day counting toward the second round of qualifying.

The second round of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers continues this Thursday, October 1, with just one match on the schedule. After South Africa’s emphatic 5-0 win over Eritrea on Wednesday, Group D will once again take center stage with the clash between Guinea and Kenya.

Thursday, October 1 schedule

Guinea - Kenya: 16:00 GMT at the September 28 Stadium in Conakry. The Syli National head into this match needing to respond after their 2-1 defeat to South Africa on the opening matchday. The Guineans had managed to equalize through Seydouba Cissé before conceding in the final quarter of an hour to a Samukele Kabini goal.

Kenya, meanwhile, began its campaign with a 1-1 draw against Eritrea. Trailing for much of the match in Nairobi, the Harambee Stars snatched an equalizer in the 87th minute through Ryan Ogam.

Guinea already under pressure

Before this match, South Africa lead Group D with 6 points after their first two games. Kenya and Eritrea each have one point, while Guinea sit bottom with zero points.

The situation in this group is unusual, as Kenya have already qualified for the finals as co-hosts of the competition alongside Tanzania and Uganda. Only the best-performing team among South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea will therefore join Kenya at AFCON 2027.

A historically balanced duel

The two sides have already faced each other six times, with a perfectly balanced record: three wins apiece and eight goals scored by each team. The full head-to-head record between Guinea and Kenya also shows that they had never previously met in AFCON qualifying.

For the Syli National, a win is already important to stay in touch with South Africa in the race for the only available spot. Kenya, meanwhile, will mainly seek to continue its competitive preparation ahead of the finals being hosted at home in 2027.
