African competitions: Patrice Motsepe decides on increasing the number of clubs

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has clarified his stance regarding a possible increase in the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup as early as next season.

This statement comes in response to a proposal from the president of the Egyptian Football Association, Hany Abou Rida, who requested additional spots for the top-ranked federations according to CAF's established criteria.

Motsepe responds to the question of increasing the number of clubs

During the press conference he held this Wednesday in South Africa, the CAF chief reminded everyone that all proposals submitted to the organization are reviewed according to established procedures.

He emphasized that no changes to the competition formats can be made unilaterally, but must be studied by the relevant committees before being submitted to the decision-making bodies.

"Every time we receive a proposal, we examine it with the appropriate CAF bodies. All requests are studied with the utmost attention," said Patrice Motsepe.

Responding to repeated questions about a potential increase in the number of qualified clubs, he replied with a touch of irony: "I just answered your question. What more do you want me to say? That I will increase the number of participating clubs?"

The CAF president finally clarified that "such decisions are exclusively the responsibility of the highest bodies of the Confederation. Every proposal is forwarded to the relevant committees for analysis before an official decision is made."
