Algeria national team: Rafael Benítez favored to succeed Vladimir Petkovic

Just hours after the announcement of Vladimir Petkovic's departure, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF)is moving swiftly to find its next head coach. According to journalist Romain Molina, Rafael Benítez has emerged as the top priority for the Algerian federation, while José Peseiro is also among the profiles under consideration. The name Roberto Martínez is also circulating, although at this stage that option appears to be more speculative.

The Algerian Federation's intentions are clear: they want to hand the reins of the Fennecs to a coach from the Spanish school of football. This approach comes in the wake of Vladimir Petkovic's amicable contract termination, just weeks after Algeria's elimination in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup by Switzerland (0-2).

In this context, Rafael Benítez ticks all the boxes with his vast experience at the highest level and his impressive European track record.

A coach with an exceptional record

At 66 years old, Rafael Benítez is regarded as one of the most decorated Spanish managers of his generation. He made his name at Valencia, where he won two La Liga titles (2002 and 2004) and lifted the UEFA Cup in 2004.

He then rose to global prominence with Liverpool, capturing the 2005 Champions League after that unforgettable comeback against AC Milan in the final. He also claimed the UEFA Super Cup and the FA Cup with the Reds.

Afterward, Benítez managed some of Europe's biggest clubs: Inter Milan, where he won the Club World Cup and the Italian Super Cup; Chelsea, with whom he secured the 2013 Europa League; Napoli, where he lifted both the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup; as well as Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Dalian Professional, Everton, and Celta Vigo.

In total, his managerial career boasts over 1,000 matches at the professional level, making him one of the most experienced coaches in European football.

A first taste of international football?

While Rafael Benítez has an outstanding club career, he has yet to manage a national team. Should he take the helm for Algeria, it would mark his first experience in charge of an international side.

This lack of international experience might raise some questions, but his pedigree in European competitions, tactical discipline, and ability to handle squads packed with elite players are all strong arguments in his favor as far as the FAF is concerned.

José Peseiro and Roberto Martínez also in the mix

According to Romain Molina, José Peseiro remains a credible alternative. The Portuguese coach knows African football inside out, having led Nigeria to the final of AFCON 2023. As for Roberto Martínez, his name is also being mentioned, although there has been no concrete progress on that front so far.

The Algerian Federation is now expected to accelerate talks to quickly appoint Vladimir Petkovic's successor. The next head coach will be tasked with reviving the Fennecs after their early World Cup 2026 exit and preparing the team for upcoming continental and international challenges.
