An evening entirely focused on Lionel Messi
Beyond the sporting stakes, all eyes will be on Lionel Messi. His farewell against Benin had been scheduled several weeks in advance, following the announcement of his international retirement after the 2026 World Cup.
At 39, the Argentine captain is preparing to bring an adventure that began in 2005 to a close. He has made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals for the Albiceleste, with whom he notably won the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, as well as the 2022 Finalissima.
Benin face a Monumental in celebration
For the Guépards, this trip represents a prestigious test against one of the strongest national teams in the world. The emotional dimension should nevertheless far surpass that of a simple friendly, with the AFA having prepared several tributes for Messi’s final appearance.
The Monumental is therefore expected to experience a special night, with a match conceived as much as an international fixture as a farewell ceremony for one of the greatest figures in the history of Argentine football.
