Disney unveils animated series inspired by Lionel Messi
As Lionel Messi approaches his farewell to Argentina, he is also becoming the hero of a new animated series produced for Disney+.
Lionel Messi is preparing to turn an important page with Argentina, but his image will soon continue to live on in a completely different form. Disney+ has unveiled the first images of “Messi and the Giants”, a sports fantasy animated series directly inspired by the Argentine star.
The project was presented at San Diego Comic-Con Málaga. Set to premiere in summer 2027 on Disney+ worldwide, the series will also air on Disney Channel in the United States. Lionel Messi is not merely lending his name to the programme: he is also among the project’s executive producers.
A young Messi fan plunged into a world of giants
The story will follow Leo, a 12-year-old boy who is passionate about Messi. Transported into a parallel reality dominated by giants, the young hero will have to find a way home by relying on what he knows best: football.
In this universe, the confrontations take the form of battles inspired by the beautiful game, with “orbs” endowed with special powers. Unable to use the same supernatural abilities as his opponents, Leo will have to rely on his technique, team spirit and determination. Argentine actor Milo Burgess-Webb will voice the main character, while singer Luck Ra performs the series’ original theme song.
Messi prepares to close the Argentina chapter
The announcement comes as Lionel Messi experiences his final moments with La Albiceleste. The Argentine officially announced his international retirement on 31 August, a few weeks after the 2026 World Cup final, which they lost to Spain.
His final match with the national team is set to mark the end of a career that began in 2005. Over more than two decades, Messi has reached 207 caps and 125 goals, becoming both the most-capped player and the leading scorer in Argentina’s history.
Four major titles with Argentina
The number 10’s honours with the national team primarily include the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 World Cup and another Copa América in 2024. These are joined, at youth level, by the Under-20 World Cup won in 2005 and the Olympic gold medal secured in Beijing in 2008.
Before becoming a global icon with Argentina, Messi built most of his club career at FC Barcelona. With “Messi and the Giants”, his influence now extends even further beyond the pitch: Disney is transforming his sporting legacy into a fictional universe aimed at a new generation.
