Argentina: president breaks silence on Messi's father controversy

In recent hours, false reports about the death of Lionel Messi's father have escalated into a national scandal in Argentina.

While the player's family quickly responded to set the record straight, an Argentine TV host was fired after announcing the death of Jorge Messi. This fake news sparked an uproar that reached the highest levels of the state. In fact, Argentina's president, Javier Milei, posted a message on his X account.

"Just when you think you've seen it all from the media, some personalities remind us that it's always possible to sink even lower. The outrageous and unscrupulous statements made by Florencia Peña, broadcast without any verification—which would have been just as shocking even if the information had been true, since it concerns a citizen's private life—remind us of the impunity with which some individuals believe they can act simply because they have a microphone or a pen in hand, as if this means they don't have to verify the information they share, or abide by even the most basic principles of human decency, morality, or respect for the truth," the statement reads.
