Argentina sanctions Mauro Icardi until 2099

Mauro Icardi is making headlines once again, but this time away from the pitch. The 33-year-old Argentine striker, who remains without a club, has been sanctioned by the authorities in his country after a video was filmed while he was behind the wheel.

A sanction that raises questions

Argentina’s Ministry of Transport announced that Mauro Icardi’s driving licence had been suspended until 2099. According to the authorities, the former Galatasaray player was driving a minibus while his Argentine licence had expired.

The authorities also reacted to a video in which Eugenia “La China” Suárez, sitting next to Icardi, appears without a seat belt and sticks part of her body out of the vehicle’s window. After the footage was shared, the relevant services said they had checked the player’s administrative situation and fined him.

Icardi challenges the decision

Mauro Icardi was quick to respond to the Ministry of Transport on social media. The striker notably claims that his Italian driving licence remains valid until 2029 and therefore questions why the Argentine authorities consider his licence invalid.

The Argentine also strongly criticised the ministry’s communication, accusing it of seeking to create controversy instead of focusing on issues involving the country’s roads. The case comes as Mauro Icardi is going through a particularly eventful period. Without a club since leaving Galatasaray, the striker is regularly in the spotlight because of his private life, his divorce proceedings and his physical problems.
