Argentine Football crisis: Tapia and top officials indicted in 19 billion peso tax fraud

Claudio Tapia president of the Argentine Football Association AFA has been formally charged with tax evasion following a judicial ruling published on Monday 30 March.

The case also targets several senior officials within the federation adding to mounting pressure on Argentine football’s leadership.

Judicial charges & financial allegations

The charges stem from a criminal complaint filed by Argentina’s tax authority which accuses the AFA and its executives of failing to pay taxes and social security contributions.

According to the investigation, the alleged violations resulted in financial losses estimated at 19 billion Argentine pesos .. approximately $12.7 million.

Alongside Tapia, four other AFA officials have been indicted while the federation itself has been charged as a legal entity. The five official appeared before the presiding judge on 12 March as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.

Federation denies accusations

The Argentine FA has strongly rejected the allegations describing the case as politically motivated. In official response, the federation claimed the charges are part of broader campaign led by Argentine President Javier Milei to exert pressure on the country’s football institutions.

Political clash over club ownership model

At the heart of the dispute is Milei’s push to transform Argentine football clubs from non-profit associations into privately owned sports corporations.

The proposal has been widely criticized by clubs and football stakeholders who argue it contradicts the AFA’s statutes and threatens the traditional structure of the sport in the country.

Resistance to the reforms has already escalated. In early March, clubs staged a protest by refusing to play matches during the ninth round of the Argentine Primera División signaling strong institutional opposition.

Ongoing investigations add pressure

The latest charges come on top of a separate investigation that has been ongoing since 2017 involving allegations of money laundering within Argentine football structures.
