Arsenal was reportedly willing to make an unprecedented wage exception for Vinícius Junior, but the Brazilian's loyalty to Real Madrid ultimately proved decisive.

The Vinícius Junior saga could have ended very differently. According to Mario Cortegana, journalist at The Athletic, Arsenal was ready to break its usual salary structure to lure the Brazilian winger.

The financial terms on the table apparently convinced the player of the seriousness of the London club's interest. Key Arsenal decision-makers also held extensive talks with his entourage, promising him a central role in their sporting project. This aggressive approach was in line with Arsenal’s ambition to break all the records to sign him.

Real Madrid tipped the scales

In the end, Vinícius Junior's camp explained his refusal by pointing to his deep bond with Real Madrid, as well as the significant financial effort made by the Merengue board. The player’s representatives nonetheless thanked Arsenal for their approach and the treatment shown to the Brazilian international.

Vinícius Junior ultimately extended his contract through 2032, whereas his previous deal was set to expire in June 2027. This new six-year commitment shuts the door on an immediate departure and now forces Arsenal to look for another attacking target.
