Aston Villa - Fenerbahçe: Mason Greenwood returns to England
Fenerbahçe’s trip to Aston Villa marks a significant moment in Mason Greenwood’s career. This Wednesday, in the Champions League, the English striker is set to face the fans in his home country again, nearly five years after his last appearance on an English pitch.
A return after several years abroad
Greenwood’s career at Manchester United took a turn in January 2022, when he was arrested following allegations of attempted rape, coercive behaviour and assault. The charges were dropped in February 2023 by the Crown Prosecution Service. Greenwood has always denied the allegations against him.
In August 2023, Manchester United announced his departure by mutual agreement, following an internal investigation and intense controversy surrounding his potential return to the team. The striker then continued his career abroad, first at Getafe, then at Olympique de Marseille, before joining Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2026.
A reception difficult to predict
According to The Telegraph, Greenwood’s return to England could provoke hostile reactions in the stands. Questions reportedly even surrounded his travelling with the rest of the team.
On the sporting front, the striker quickly found his place in Turkey. According to figures reported by the press, he has scored six goals and provided four assists in his first fourteen appearances for Fenerbahçe. His last match in England came on January 22, 2022, in a victory for Manchester United over West Ham.
