Aston Villa: Goretzka close to making his debut
Leon Goretzka could make his first Champions League appearance with Aston Villa this Wednesday. The German midfielder has been included in the squad for the first time since joining the English club, after several weeks disrupted by physical problems.
Goretzka returns after a difficult period
Having joined Aston Villa at the end of August, Goretzka was quickly held back by injuries that forced him to reduce his workload. His integration was therefore delayed, preventing him from fully regaining his competitive rhythm so far. On the eve of the match against Fenerbahçe, coach Unai Emery confirmed that the 31-year-old would be available in the squad.
His presence represents an important first step in his return. A start remains unlikely, however: the staff could prefer to bring him on during the match to allow him to gradually rediscover his feel for the game.
A new chapter after eight years at Bayern
Goretzka joined Aston Villa after spending eight seasons wearing the colours of Bayern Munich. Accustomed to major European fixtures, the Germany international brings valuable experience to the midfield.
His profile, characterised by his work rate, power and ability to push forward, could give Emery more options once the player is fully fit. The match against Fenerbahçe could therefore mark the beginning of his integration into the team, even if his playing time is expected to remain limited at first.
